Luke 14:27-29,33-35: "And you cannot be my disciple if you do not carry your own cross and follow me. But don't begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first getting estimates and then checking to see if there is enough money to pay the bills? Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of funds. So no one can become my disciples without giving up everything for me. Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for fertilizer. It is thrown away. Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand."
Carrying a cross means sacrifice. It means giving up our desires and desiring His will. It means taking ourselves off the throne of our lives, and putting Christ there as our Lord and Savior. As we capitulate ourselves through submission to the Lordship of Christ, we find His salvation. Christ says "don't even begin thinking of discipleship until you count the cost, otherwise you might not complete the task." If you don't complete the task, you are as flavorless salt and thrown away. You must release everything that may be an idol in your life, and yield to Jesus as Lord! The beauty with this pursuit is in the fact that we were all created to be intimately connected to Him. When we submit to the Lord, we find His peace, His wholeness, and His completion. No one who follows this path ever regrets its end, for God blesses our yielding with abundant life (John 10:10) and eternal life (John 17:3).
